Outfits on the Cheap: Flower Child

In this outfit, I let my inner bohemian out for some fresh air and combined two types of floral prints. I wore this outfit to run a few errands. If I didn’t have to dress in the real world, I would so rock the true boho chic look like Mary Kate and Ashley. Although they sometimes go a little too far with the look (almost like the Derelict collection from Zoolander- anyone remember that movie?), I love how cool and effortless they appear. The day was muggy and rainy, so I let my hair also go a little wild.

Tunic: $14, TJ Maxx

Red Jeans: $17.99, Dots

Stacked Bracelets: $15, various places

Floral Flats: $12, on clearance at Target

Total Outfit: $58.99

If you didn’t have to dress for the “real world”, how would you dress?

J9′s Top 9 Trends of the Decade

2011 not only starts a new year but a new decade. We followed a lot of  trends in the new millennium, some were great ideas, some…not so much. Here are my Top 9 trends of the decade:

1. Track Suits: Whether velour, cotton or terry, we all wore these comfy pants sets with matching hoodies. Some of us paid $40, while some of us paid $400. We took this high-end workout look and brought it mainstream. What were we thinking?

2. Crocs: I have no words for this except, WTF? How did medical and food industry shoes become acceptable to wear? If you followed this trend, I am sorry. Truly sorry.

3. Ed Hardy/von Dutch/Trucker Hat Look: I think every one attempted this look at least once in the past 10 years. It was cute when Madonna started the trend a few years ago. Now that John Gosselin is wearing it, it’s time for ALL of us to give this look up.

4. Boho Chic: Thanks to the Olsen Twins, we now have the new “boho chic” look which I rock on a regular basis. It combines the effortless Bohemian style with classic pieces. In order to make this look right, don’t forget the “chic” part. The homeless look is never good.

Boho Chic:

Boho Hobo:

5. Spray Tan: This is a great way to get a sun kissed glow without the risk of getting skin cancer. Just make sure no to go overboard.

6. Hair Extensions: What a great way to add length and volume to your hair style. And now they are more affordable than ever with synthetic options.

7. Cocktail Rings: This is a great way to spice up an outfit in an affordable way. These way large rings say “Hello, I’m sassy!” I hope these stay in style for a while.

8. Ballet Flats: Audrey Hepburn started this trend over 50 years ago and now it’s finally back! Appropriate for both the office and evening out, ballet flats still make our outfits look chic without hurting our feet (he he that sort of rhymes).

9. SPANX: This is one of the best investments to add to your wardrobe. No matter what size you are, Spanx can help smooth lines and tuck everything in. EVERY celebrity wears them. A lot of great inventions came out of this decade like the smart phone, Blu-Ray, etc. , but the best of all in Spanx. If you don’t have them, go out and get them…NOW!

What do you think? What top trends of the past decade did I miss? Which were your favorite? Which ones do you want to forget?

J9′s Top 9 Trends To Try this Fall

It’s finally starting to feel like Fall (well at least here in Florida, it ‘s been fall for a little while everywhere else), and that means busting out the long-missed sweaters and boots. There are a lot of fun trends that you can rock for cheap. Here are my top trends worth a few of your hard-earned dollars:

1. Shirt Dresses:

These universally flattering dresses are great for work and play. Wear them with pumps for day and then with tights and hot boots for night. Affordable options are everywhere ranging from $15-$30 at Target (http://www.target.com/Shirtdresses-Dresses-Clothing-Womens/b/256154011/ref=_12?node=256154011) Old Navy (http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=15292) and Ross.

2. Tights!

Have fun with opaque colors and pretty patterns, but be sure to do this appropriately. If your dress already has a strong print, you may want to go with a solid pattern and muted color; otherwise, this is a great way to jazz up a simple dress. Stein Mart is currently selling Anne Klein tights in all colors and patterns for $5!!!

3. Platform Pumps:

I’ve been quite obsessed over these impractical, yet ego-boosting shoes. Wearing these says “Here I am.” Just putting them on adds confidence (and height)! They come in all types of lovely colors and patterns and at Macy’s you can find Madden Girl platform pumps in various colors for only $39.99. Use your Macy’s card and get 20% off!

4. Gray Nail Polish:

You may be thinking ‘gray on my nails, really?’. Yes, really. Gray is the new nude especially for Fall. The above color is OPI (for Sephora) in Metro. Play around with this grayish, purply color trend. It’s looks great on most skin tones and at only $8 at Walgreens, it’s an economical trend to try.

5. Cross Body & Messenger Bags:

Finally, these practical, yet too cute bags bags are in style! I’ve waited almost 10 years! No longer are we forced to slouch all of our stuff onto one shoulder, and now our arms are free! DSW has Nine West cross body bags starting at $19.95: http://www.dsw.com/handbags/collection/crossbody/page-1/?sort=price&new=true

6. Minimalism:

Quite a contrast to my usual Boho Chic style, I’m really digging minimalism. Whether it is casual, for the office, or the red carpet, no one rocks this look better than Jennifer Anniston! She focuses on key pieces and has simple accessories (if any) and hair. If you are going to try this, make sure the your clothes are well-fitted. With minimum accessorizing and styling, this look is really affordable!

7. Booties!

These entered the world of fashion last season, and for a while I didn’t embrace this adorable trend. I have now come to my senses and wear these any chance I get. They are super accessible and comfy. I got mine online at target.com for only $12.99! And really, they’re boots for Floridians.

8. RED

I am so glad that red is one of the top fall colors! As soon as you put a red dress on you instantly gain confidence. This power color also represents Women’s Heart Disease Awareness and Prevention which is very near and dear to my, well heart. Many Ross stores are currently selling Red Calvin Klein sheath dresses for great prices. Perfect for the office and holiday parties.

9. Faux Fur Vests

Are faux fur vests practical? No. Will they be out of style next year? Maybe. Are they fabulous? Absolutely! I can’t wait to get a faux fur vest, but because they are pretty impractical and may be obsolete next fall, I won’t be spending a lot of cash. In the juniors department at JC Penney, they are selling faux fur vests for $17.99…and that’s where I’ll be going.

I think that’s enough for now.
